How to Get Traffic To Your Blog or Website
Once you’ve created your website or blog you will no doubt be trying to figure out how to get traffic to it. If you’re not familiar with what “web traffic” means, it just means people who are visiting your site. I don’t know who chose to use the term traffic, but it seems very appropriate to me because some people just whiz by without stopping or even looking around while others putter around looking at everything. When I think about it like that, it seems just like driving in real traffic.
So how can you get more traffic to your site, especially when it’s new? There are quite a few ways that you might be able to get people to visit your site so we’ll take a quick look at some of those ways, but before we do I want to share my number one recommendation for anyone trying to get traffic to their website.
Priority #1 : Create High-Quality, Valuable Content
Sure, you could throw together a simple site without a whole lot of value and try to generate income from it. I’ve tried this. And it can work in a limited manner. However, it is not very valuable and over time I don’t find it to be a very sustainable business model. Why not just create a site where people want to consume your high quality valuable content and interact with you? Don’t get me wrong, it is still a lot of work but you are creating something of value which will hopefully keep on repaying you.
If you do have a high quality web site with valuable content your efforts to get more traffic to it will no doubt be rewarded much more compared to a site which doesn’t.
Priority #2: Make Sure Your Site is Ready
If your site isn’t ready for additional web traffic, you’re not going to be able to take full advantage of any benefit you might get from these efforts, so make sure your site is ready. Here are a few things to check over first:
- SEO – Do you have a solid foundation for SEO on your site?
- Reliable Web Server – Will your web server be able to handle the extra traffic, especially if it comes all at once, from something like being on the Reddit home page?
- Do you have broken pages? Pay attention to this, especially your “money” or “conversion” pages. If they aren’t working, you’re going to lose out on potential income.
Priority #3: Not All Traffic Is Created Equal
Unless you just want bragging rights or have a way to monetize low-value traffic, more traffic isn’t necessarily going to fix anything for you. What I mean by low-value traffic is traffic that comes to your site but doesn’t care at all about your topic. You can buy advertisements and get lots of traffic to your site, but if you are getting people who aren’t interested in what you have to offer, you could be wasting your time and money. I recommend you focus on getting the right type of traffic, even if it is much less.
14 Ways to Get More Traffic to Your Site or Blog
Here are 14 different ways to get more traffic to your site. I’ve tried most of them one way or another and have found each one to be valuable depending on the situation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Advertise Your Site
You could advertise your website. There are a number of options that fall into this category anywhere from making fliers and distributing them physically to buying banner or CPC ads on other web sites or in search engine results.
Here are a few ways you could advertise your site:
- Banner or Display Ads
- CPC Ads on Other Sites or Search Engines
- Social Media ads, such as on Facebook or Twitter
- Physical posters, signs, billboards, fliers
- Pay to view or Pay to Click ads, such as Google Adwords
Engage in Social Media
I personally dislike this term, because I hear it all too often like it’s some revolutionary way to get more web traffic without really having to try. That doesn’t really seem to be the case in my experience. In order to do well in social media, you will need to have a solid strategy, create valuable, high quality content people will want to interact with, and build relationships with people.
Participate in Social Content Sites
Participating in sites like Reddit or Medium can have a big boost in traffic if your site is picked up by the right people or gets a lot of exposure on those sites. DO NOT participate in these sites just to promote your own content only as your profile may be flagged, or worse yet your domain may be flagged and ruin your chances or any future traffic. If you don’t have the time or don’t want to participate in a constructive manner, don’t do anything here. Doing nothing is better than getting your site flagged as a spammer.
Be a Guest Blogger
One way to increase your visibility is to write a guest blog or article on another web site that is relevant in your niche. This can help to present yourself or your site as an authority on your topic and if you have links in your article (I would not recommend doing this without at least having a link in your byline) you can get some traffic through those links. The links may also help you with your search engine placement and thereby also helping you get more traffic from search engines.
Accept Guest Blog Posts
By accepting guest blog posts, you are giving others the opportunity that you are yourself looking for – increasing traffic to their web site and giving them a link. Some guest bloggers will promote their blog post they wrote for your web site through their social media and other channels which can result in additional traffic to your site.
Try Article Marketing
Article marketing is similar to guest blogging in the sense that you are creating original content for another web site in exchange for exposure and links. You will need to find a sites which will accept your articles and provide you with an opportunity to link back to your web site.
You could interview people who have their own blog or web site. They don’t even have to be experts or well known people and in fact I think the less they fall into those categories, the more willing they will be to be interviewed and to provide a link or promotion on social media. This worked really well for me on one of my sites. If you are able to automate this by having your interview form automatically create a draft post in WordPress for you, it can be quite an easy process to manage.
Ask Your Connections for Help
Many people seem to skip over this one. There are people out there that may be willing to help you if you just ask. Maybe you know someone who has a successful web site and would be willing to help. Or maybe your friends have a lot of social media connections, or an email list, or whatever. Ask them to help you – just remember to do it in a respectful way.
Consider Banner or Ad Exchanges
This is an old school method, and while I don’t think it is super valuable, it may be something to consider for some people. Basically how this works is you provide an advertisement for other people in the exchange, and based on the number of clicks you send to other sites, that is how many ads or clicks they generate back to you. It won’t ever generate a whole lot more than you send them, and if you don’t have much traffic (or any!) to begin with it probably isn’t even worth considering.
Participate in Forums
By being an active member in a relevant forum where you provide (hopefully you’re sensing a theme) high quality, valuable content in your interactions on the forum you may be able to build your reputation and gain some traffic through a link in your signature or on your profile page. Don’t do this just to promote yourself – do it to give back or share your expertise and learn from others in those forums in a humble and respectful manner.
Comment on Relevant Blogs
Commenting on blogs relevant to your niche may get you some incremental traffic through clicks if you are allowed to add a link to your profile and it can also get you noticed by the authors of those sites, which may then interact with your content either though linking to you or discussing with you on social media. This can be a great way to get your content in front of another person’s existing audience.
Add a Link in Your Email Signature
I don’t recommend doing this with your work email unless your site IS your work. Otherwise, just include your link in your personal email signature and remove it when you’re sending an email to someone it wouldn’t be appropriate to send it to.
Send a Press Release
Sending a press release can be a very valuable way to increase exposure. If you get picked up by a traditional media outlet you can get a very nice traffic spike. There are lots of people already doing this, so be sure to try and make your press release stand out and be very professional. It can also be costly as many of the free press release sites don’t have great distribution to high quality media.
Contact Your Local Media
Especially if you live in a small community, your local media may be looking for things to cover for local news. I can see the headline now; Local Woman Creates Web Site To Compete with Food Network.
Those are just some ideas, and no doubt there are plenty more out there. If you build it, they won’t necessarily come but if you build something good and they do come to visit your site, you will have a much better chance of succeeding.
Do you have other ideas?
Please don’t hesitate to share them with me and the rest of the internet in the comments below. We will all appreciate you for it!
